Youth Entrepreneur Diaries: Terri Lynn Stone from Maiden Stone

Youth Entrepreneur Diaries: Terri Lynn Stone from Maiden Stone

This Youth month we will be featuring all the wonderful Proudly South African youth entrepreneurs we stock on TravelSOOQ. First up is Terri Lynne Stone from Maiden Stone.

Terri Lynne Stone knew that she had found her calling in life, when she stepped into a jewellery workshop for the first time. She thought to herself: “Self, I can’t wait to make pretty things.” Three years later, she had completed her diploma in jewellery design and manufacture at Durban University of Technology.

Maiden Stone was officially launched in 2015 during Terri's second year of her diploma. After graduating, she took a break from all things jewellery and decided to gallivant through Southeast Asia. Returning to Durban in 2019, she picked up where she left off, with a head full of ideas and hands itching to get back into what she loved.

The brand hopes to capture the diversity, cultures and beauty of our motherland, South Africa. They believe diversity is something to be celebrated, respected and encouraged.

To get to know Terri a bit more we asked a few questions and what inspires her and also what she would like to share with budding entrepreneurs like herself:

Terri, What inspires you? “I am inspired by a number of different things, but if we are talking about where the inspiration for my designs comes from, I love geometric shapes.

"A lot of my inspiration comes from art deco and indebele design"

Can you give your best business advice for young entrepreneurs wanting to go into business?  “Having your own business is really not for the faint hearted. There are fantastic days and then there are seriously bad days. It's very important to surround yourself with people who will support and motivate you (and feed you when you have had a bad month of sales.)”

Whats the biggest challenge you had to overcome? “Challenges aren't something that ever go away. I am constantly facing challenges, and constantly having to find the strength to overcome them. Personally, I think it's important to believe in yourself and always try your best, even when you don't feel like it.”
Who is your business mentor? “Pinterest 😂 Actually I try to get business inspiration from as many sources as possible. My dad is a great help when it comes to all things business, so a phone call to him can help me make up my mind on all things business.”
Finally – what is your absolute favourite business inspirational quoteMake it happen!”
